Our rubbish and recycling service
Ashburton District Council provides a wheelie bin and crate kerbside collection service to properties in Ashburton, Chertsey, Fairton, Lake Hood, Methven, Mt Somers, Mayfield, Winslow and Rakaia.
It includes:
- A 240 litre yellow recycling wheelie bin
- A 45 litre green crate for glass bottles and jars
- An 80 litre red rubbish wheelie bin
Red rubbish bins are collected every week. Yellow recycling bins and green glass crates are collected fortnightly, but on alternate weeks. This means that on the week your yellow bin is not collected, the green glass crate is collected instead. Please make sure that bins for kerbside collection are out by 7.30am.
Check the sticker on the side of your yellow recycling bin to see which day of the week your bins are collected AND what week you are. You are either Week 1 or Week 2. Download the Week 1 or Week 2 collection calendar below to learn which bin to put out with your red rubbish bin each week.
Public Holidays - Christmas Day and Good Friday
If your collection day falls on Christmas Day or Good Friday, your bins/crate will be collected the very next day. All remaining collection days that week will also be picked up the day after their usual collection day.
For example, if Christmas Day is on a Tuesday, Tuesday's collection is picked up on Wednesday, Wednesday's collection is picked up on Thursday, Thursday's collection is picked up on Friday and Friday's collection is picked up on Saturday.
No other public holidays are affected.
What goes in your bins?
The red rubbish bin is for everything that is not recyclable, including household and organic waste.
The yellow recycling bin is for recycling hard rigid plastic (grades 1, 2 and 5), cardboard, paper, tins and metal cans. All recycling must be clean of food scraps and loose, not bagged. No lids are allowed in recycling.
The green glass crate is for recycling glass bottles and jars. Glass must be clean. No lids are allowed in recycling.

Additional bins are now available
If you are struggling to keep your weekly/fortnightly volume of rubbish and recycling inside the current service's limits, you can decide if you would like to pay for an additional service. Council has additional rubbish and recycling bins available if you need them. These bins are charged to the user, rather than through rates, which means tenants can pay for them rather than having to go through the landlord. These additional bins DO NOT replace the bins and crates provided through rates. They are an extra service.
